Environmental assets will be identified and protected under a biological study being conducted by Maroondah Council. A consulting team has started work on: locating sites of biological significence in the city, surveying flora and fauna, identifying management issues relating to the sites surveyed, producing maps of the sites, and so on.

Maroondah Council's new chief Commissioner Moreton Brown took in some of the municipality's natural beauty this week when he visited the northern end of Glenvale Rd., Ringwood North. As the area contains an array of indigenous flora, the area has recently been listed a "Significent Roadside Area". The listing was the result of a vegetation suvey by council. Pictured are: Jan Bateman, John Nathan and new Maroondah Chief Commissioner, Moreton Browne.

Police have denied a significent rise in Maroondah crime figures is related to the introduction of poker machines in the area. The denial comes in spite of an upsurge in crimes of deception and theft in Maroondah during 1996. Ringwood Senior Detective Glenn Powell last week said there had been "a few minor cases but nothing major in terms of gambling related crime".

(Source: The First One Hundred Years by R.S. Medew and I.M. Bowman - A History of The Medew Family in Victoria - page 11 extracts) - Charles Turner Medew (1829-1915 ) arrived in Victoria from England in 1857. He eventually settled in Ringwood as the original purchaser of Crown Allotment 32, Section C, where he built his own home in 1888 and became well known locally "for his fine building work and stone masonry." ... "In his retirement, Charles Medew experimented with model helicopters. About 1910, at the age of 80 years, he was able to raise these helicopters to such a point of efficiency that, just with an elastic wound propeller, when released they could fly upwards to the height of the large oak trees." ... "(Also) In 1910, Charles obtained plans and made a model of the Wright Brothers' biplane entirely of wood, with laminated wood propeller and driven by twisted elastic bands." This model remained in his workshop for many years after his death and with his family's permission was eventually placed in the Melbourne Science Museum.

List of Parish map references including property bearings, distances in Links, and markings on trees. Pound Bend area of Warrandyte marked as Reserve For Aborigines. Descriptive remarks include areas marked "scrubby, flat, sandy soil". Several other references faded and illegible.

Buff coloured letter dated 11th March 1965, stating the Council has "decided that as a fitting climax to the ceremony of conferring upon the Unit (Royal Engineers 3 Division) the Freedom of Entry to Ringwood, a Ball be held at the Unit's depot in Dublin road, Ringwood east, on the night of the ceremony - that is, the 27th March next" Proceeds to the appeal for erection of the proposed Maroondah Cojmmunity Hospital. Invitation signed by B.J. Hubbard, Mayor - City of Ringwod Note: At the time of cataloguing (May 2024), no photos of the Ball have been found, nor any reference to the Ball in local newspapers.

Gaming has been banned at 17 strip shopping centres across Maroondah. Most of the centres of council's updated list had previously been identified as inappropriate for gaming. According to a council report, the State Government's request "is a clear indication that the statewide cap of 27,500 gaming machines is to be retained.

Maroondah gamblers lost just over $27 million on the city's 477 poker machines during the last financial year. Victorian Council on Problem Gambling spokesman, Rob Wootton said research showed that most money spent on gambling came from the household budget. Welfare agency budgets have been stretched to the limit.

A refuge for homeless youth in Ringwood will be refurbished thanks to a State Government grant just announced by Member for Warrandyte, Phil Honeywood. Run by the Wesley Central Mission, the home in Loughnan's Road has provided emergency accommodation for youths for more than 13 years. $22,347 will be spent on rebuilding to provide a better quality home.
